Cape Peninsula University of Technology is a Higher Educational Institution in the Western Cape boasting five campuses – Bellville, Cape Town, Mowbray, Granger Bay and Wellington Campus. The aim of the project was to increase the capacity of the campus in order to achieve the full time equivalent as per projected enrolment plans of the Teacher Education. The brief was to develop new academic lecture theatres, a model school library, staff offices as well as a new student centre hub. Wellington Teachers College must inherit a sense of place, better known as Genius Loci. Consequently the design of the new extension relies on the principle of designing not to a specific concept but to a spatial integrity. Spaces are created that promotes vibrant well resourced learning and teaching environments rather than conforming to one specific idea. Therefore the new areas as specified by the brief aim to be spaces which functions according to their programme, but more importantly encourage optimal learning and teaching.
A strong sense of arrival required that new extensions (specifically the Model School Library) are placed right at the main entrance of the campus near the edge, connecting and creating a strong clear definition between the old and the new architectural entities of the campus. Currently the campus is fragmentised, but the new extension aims to bring all buildings together, while introducing new means of access and spatial opportunities on campus. Another important aim was to integrate the whole campus as an extension of the town rather than a disconnected institution. The Teachers College are enhancing their standard of education by providing these new types of facilities such as a Model School Library and an Interactive Teaching Space. The library has also been designed to be much more user friendly than the current space, with study spaces situated throughout and shelves placed at strategic points to absorb noise. A permanent area for a disability unit has also been included in the new design as well as a lift and ramps to cater for students living with disabilities.
